Brian Stone



R. Brian Stone is a practicing designer, educator, and researcher
in the area of interaction design, information design, user experience, and communication through motion. He teaches Visual Communication in the Department of Design at The Ohio State University and is a principal partner in the international consultancy, Latitude 40 Design. His work has garnered numerous awards for design excellence, usability, and user satisfaction. As a researcher, Brian’s focus is in the creation of screen-based forms that enable interaction. These forms are manifested into products such as web sites, interactive experiences, multimedia presentations, and kinetic typographic messages. He is the author of several articles on the subject and has presented his research at several international venues.

He is a frequent speaker at conferences and universities and has held visiting appointments at the National University of Singapore (NUS) and Escola Superior de Desenho Industrial (ESDI) in Brasil. Professor Stone also has given lectures at the University of the Arts, University of Tennessee, Georgia Institute of Technology, Arizona State University, Virginia Polytechnic Institute, San Jose State University, University of Rio de Janeiro, Brasil, Pontifícia Universidade Católica de Minas Gerais, Brasil, University of London, University of Tampere, Finland, and Beijing University of Aeronautics.

He is a founding member of Designers 421, an organization designed to serve as a hub for the engagement of multidisciplinary designers-of-color through social networking, story‐sharing, mentoring and advocacy. He also chronicled the career of America’s first African American automobile designer, McKinley Thompson, in IDSA’s Innovation magazine.

Apple Computer has recognized Professor Stone as one of the top educational technology leaders in the US with the Apple Distinguished Educator award. He is also a recipient of the 2002 Alumni Award for Distinguished Teaching from The Ohio State University and the 2005 Order of Omega Faculty Recognition Award.

Prior to joining the faculty at OSU, he taught for 6 years at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. He has also held staff positions at Nationwide Insurance, Surgical Laser Technologies, Orthovita, Noel Mayo Associates (Philadelphia), and the Bailey Design Group. Professor Stone holds a MA and MFA in Design from The Ohio State University and a BFA in Graphic Design from the University of the Arts.
