State of Black Designers: 20 years later…not much has changed

“When black people have liberated spaces to play in, without fear of poverty or ostracism, then the potential for expression becomes unlimited.”

The other day I came across an article in a design group I am a part of on facebook. I was intrigued when I saw it was about the Organization of Black Designers Conference because I had just attended my first OBD conference only a year ago, the same year we started Creative Control Fest. While reading the article I got excited about the prospect of 200 designers of color coming together! But the overwhelming feeling of “There is still so much work to do…” resounded as I read more and realized that not much has changed in the design world since 1994 as it relates to black designers. Yes, there has been progress and there are more people of color taking getting into creative fields but the ethnic and cultural divide is still vast the design and related fields. There are still those of us saying “WE ARE HERE, WE DESIGN, AND WE ARE JUST AS GOOD.” This is just one of the reasons we started Creative Control Fest. We are glad that there are more people of color represented in these fields and even though there is still much work to be done the CCF team is gladly taking on the challenge to provide a platform that we hope will lead to a more diverse landscape. You can read the article in here.
